The 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan created a major problem for the Star Trek film series; the death of one of its main characters, Mr Spock. Whether Star Trek would, could or should have continued without Spock is debateable.

Fortunately, Leonard Nimoy had second thoughts about leaving Star Trek and the makers inserted a coda into the film suggesting that his character might indeed return. Classic Movie Review – Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Three years after its unexpected revival for the big screen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, Star Trek delivered its first film sequel, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, a film usually considered to be the best in the series and one of the highlights of the Star Trek canon.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan brings back one of the best remembered antagonists from the original Star Trek TV series, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban), a genetically-engineered genius from the late 20th century. Khan and his crew were found in suspended animation on board their ship the Botany Bay in the TV episode “Space Seed”. They attempted to take over the U.S.S. Enterprise, but were eventually foiled, and sent to settle the uninhabited planet of Ceti Alpha V. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

Cancelled in 1969 after three seasons on television, Star Trek appeared to lay dormant in the late 1970s, until it was unexpectedly revived in a big screen version as Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the film that would transfer the Star Trek brand from the small screen to feature films and precede its 1980s television revival.
